Regret and New Revelations

Hi. This is my new fanfic! I hope you guys like it. If I do anything wrong please- criticism and corrections about the facts of the story and if I'm being to rushed will help. For they are long known habits. Enjoy!

"Sometimes when we lose things we blame others. But we just have to forget the past and forgive those who we hurt in life"

All is well for the hero of Berk(or as well as it can get). Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III is sleeping in his bed at the time of dawn.

It has been about five weeks since Hiccup and Toothless defeated the Red Death and formed a bond between Berk and the dragons. But it doesn't change much of his daily life.

"Hiccup!"

Dad...

"Get out of bed. You'll be late for work in the forge."

"Five more... minutes...." Hic groaned. "Now!" his father yelled.

Hiccup groaned again. Sure he was the hero of Berk. But that didn't mean he had less work to do. Metaphorically speaking- he had even more work to do. New saddles had to be made for each trainee and almost every Saturday(his supposed day off) he had to wake up at around every 4 a.m. for village meetings.

Hiccup groaned again. He slid his tunic, leather belt, and pants on. Now where are my boots- Hiccup fell flat on the floor. He looked sadly at his left leg. He remembered that even when he saved his village, it happened with a small price. As he got up he sighed and put on his right boot and his metal prosthetic on his left 'stump' he thought bitterly.

At the blacksmith shop Gobber was already making a harness for each and everyone who had started riding.

"Nice to see you, Hiccup. We should get started before the coming storm sets in."

"Is it hail season already?" Hiccup asked with a sharp tone.

"I suppose," Gobber replied. Gobber was still the same lazy but useful viking except for the fact that his new Terrible Terror named Bones started to take a liking to the warmth of the shop.

Hiccup always had to look around the room before he started for Bones was always well... jumpy seems to be the right word. Hiccup took a large piece of leather and started to cut it into measured pieces for the saddle and a few strips that would be used for the buckles on the straps. Next, Hiccup took out a few pieces of metal. He started to heat them in the furnace. Once taken out, he started to strike into it with a hammer and pick. He started to cool down the pieces in cool water and started to put it all together. He was starting to improve in forge work. You could call him a master if you saw his work in person.

"Great," Hiccup said while brushing the sweat off his face. "Only fifty more to go." Hiccup sighed and continued to work.

In the mead hall, Stoick was busy with daily business from the other vikings.

"- and he tried to-"

"-THAT THING ALMOST ATE ALL THE-"

"- there is a large problem at the stables-"

Stoick put his head in his hands. All these problems kept building up. He even had problems with the amout of recources that they needed."

"Enough!" Stoick yelled. "We are already in a big problem with the small amount of recoures we have left. I have enough trouble to attend to. You people are vikings. You should already know how to take care of yourselves."

Stoick stopped before continuing again.

"Tonight, we will have a meeting. I want someone to inform everyone else in the village to come tonight. Dismissed!"

"There... finished." Hiccup slumped to the ground. It was evening. Hiccup was so tired that he didn't even notice that Bones decided to take a nap on his lap.

'I can't wait to get back home to my nice, warm, bed... and wake up late in the afternoon and-'

There was a sudden knock on the door. It was Spitelout, Snotlout's father.

"Hiccup, your father has called a meeting. Everyone has to attend."

Hiccup groaned and nodded. With that note, he left.

As Hiccup arrived in the mead hall the meeting had already started. Hail had already started to fall and the hearthes were already burning. The mead hall had gotten bigger since the dragons tended to come in and live in the large building. Most of the counselors were upset but there was just no more space in the village.

"- and I have been given reports of the amount of cattle and crops we currently have left." Hiccup took a seat next to his father who regarded him gently. Hiccup smiled at some of his friends around the table: Snotlout, Ruffnut, Tuffnut, and Fishlegs. His girlfriend Astrid wasn't there due to the amount of burnt wood that was left for her family to clean. A group of wild Terrible Terrors came into the village and started to burn everything until Fislegs doused them with water and drew them out of the village. Let's just say that the aftermath wasn't pretty.

"Now I know that this might be the wrong time but we will leave tomorrow to start a raid on the northern tribes. My decision is final. Is that clear to any of you who have been arguing amongst yourselves?"

"Dad..." Hiccup had a doubting look on his face.

"Go ahead, Hiccup, speak." Hiccup took a deep breath.

"Why don't you negotiate with the northern tribes first?"

Stoick sighed, unamused. "It's because they have been our enemy tribe for twenty years. They will have nothing to say to us and they will try to kill us on sight."

"Well, why don't you just try to talk to them first? You don't know what could happen. You haven't even tried," Hiccup replied as if stating the obvious. Stoick noticed all eyes on both of them.

"I know what's right for my village, son. Listen to what I say and follow my orders!"

"No, Dad. You Listen to me for once. We can't just act against these people so quickly. Innocent people can get hurt. We would just be proving to them that we are savages. We have to think before we act!"

Stoick was getting impatient. Lights from the fires started to glow across the hall. Everyone was silent and waiting. Some Deadly Nadders woke up from their slumber and stared at them.

"As I said before, I am only doing what I think is best for my people. No more distractions. Ready the ships for tomorrow." Stoick started to head out the main doors until Hiccup grabbed his left arm.

"Dad! Please. Don't do this. You know better. Mom wouldn't agree to thi-" Stoick grabbed his son's collar violently.

"Don't you dare bring your mother to this subject! If it wasn't for you she would still be alive. You useless excuse for a viking. You are weak. If only I had another son to take your place, I wouldn't have to look at your pathetic face again!" Stoick dropped his son to the floor. Hiccup, with eyes wide, started to tremble and tears started to fall out of his eyes.

'Is this what he really thinks of me? Did I really cause my mother's death?'

Stoick did not flinch from the display he showed to the village. All eyes were on him. He started to leave without a word, leaving Hiccup on the ground.

Gobber helped Hiccup get up. "Come on , Hic. You can stay with me at the shop tonight." Hiccup only nodded, still trembling from what had currently occured. The crowds parted for both of them to pass. Everyone started to leave. It had been a long night.

KNOCK, KNOCK...

Hiccup woke up from his sleepy state. He really did sleep at the shop all night. He soon fell asleep with his head resting on the table of his private, back room.

"Hiccup, it's Gobber. May I come in?" Hiccup opened the door and found Gobber being licked by Toolthless at the doorway.

"Apparently, I couldn't stop him from coming inside." Gobber pointed at the black colored dragon with his good hand. Hiccup had to laugh at that. "It's as if you're pet just knows when you're gone or if you're ever in a problem."

Hiccup smiled but it just went away just as quickly as it came. He looked at his hands and sighed. Toothless went near Hiccup and sniffed him.

"Gobber," Hiccup said almost too quietly. "What happened to my mother?"  The burly viking shook his head.

"I think that we should talk about this after you get yourself cleaned up. You look like a Monstrous Nightmare barfed you out from its throat." Hiccup looked down at himself. His master was right. He was a mess(except for the part about the Monstrous Nightmare).

Hiccup proceeded to the bathing room. He always kept an extra pair of clothes in the shop for any occasion. He got a few buckets of water and placed them neatly on the floor. He started to remove his garments and set them on the counter. He placed the water into the tub and stepped inside. The cold water made him shiver. But as he started to sit his body temperature started to adapt and he started to think again.

Astrid Hofferson finally woke up to the sunlight illuminating from her window.

'Ugh... I hate it when my mother opens the curtains every hour before I wake up.'

Astrid was still tired from the amount of debris the wild Terrors caused yesterday morning. It took about the whole entire day cleaning up the whole place. "The things that happen when I'm put on clean up duty," she winced, remembering what episodes occured. During the clean up, there were some little 'presents' the tiny dragons left. She even slipped and was lucky enough to land just inches away from the droppings.

The young lady sighed and got back up from bed.

"I wonder if Hiccup or the others are having less problems than I do." She would soon realize that she was very wrong.

Gobber sighed after setting the new saddles outside for the riders to look at for fitting their dargons. He heard familiar footsteps of metal and boot filling the silence in the shop.

"You promised me an explanation?" Hiccup asked with sarchasm and glum.

Gobber turned around and sighed. "I knew that there would be the day we would tell you this story." He chuckled and continued. "Your mother, what can I say about her? Ah, yes. She was a great warrior. You could say that she was like Astrid except she had no rude attitude. She always stood confidently and defended those who were in need. But she was always creative and made many small inventions just like you." Hiccup smiled for a moment.

"She was promised to your father by an agreement made by each of their family members. At first she wasn't happy with it-"

"I can see why," Hiccup said with resentment.

"But," Gobber continued, "she had fallen for Stoick when he showed that he was different from the others she met. She saw something else in your father that none of us knew."

"I know!" Hiccup yelled, "I heard this so many times already from uncle Spitelout. What I want to know is how my mother died." Tears started to form in his eyes. Gobber sighed again.
"Your mother didn't die of sickness or even chilbirth. There was a raid from some of the Northern tribes twelve years ago when you were still a small child from the age of three. The house that you and your family were living in was on fire. Valhallarama, your mother, tried to save you even when your father said that it was useless. She saved you just in time and passed your small unconcious form to your father. She collapsed on the spot and we discovered that she had large burns and deep scars across her back. She passed on without saying a word." Hiccup fell silent. He couldn't believe that his mother risked her life to save him. He now blamed himself for her death.

Gobber saw the look on his face and knew exactly what he was thinking. "Don't blame yourself, Hic. It was her choice to save you. And if you're thinking about your father, he doesn't hate you. He just felt broken and blamed everyone."

Hiccup heard a horn from the docks blow. The vikings were leaving for the raid. "Thanks, Gobber," Hiccup looked up at his master with sad, green eyes. "I'm sorry for shouting at you earlier."

"It's all right, boyo. Least I can do for the hero who saved Berk.'

Hiccup grinned. "Well I'll see you later, Gobber. I have to talk to the others." Hiccup left out the door with Toothless not far behind.

While there are some grammatical errors and a few overly-repeated words, it's still pretty good for a fan-fiction written 3 years ago. It's certainly better than the stuff I wrote 3 years ago!
